What Are Partial Dentures?

When you lose a tooth, either naturally or by accident, the nearby teeth may begin to tilt or shift into the empty space. It is also possible for teeth on the other side of your jaw to shift up or down toward the space. This can have an impact on the way you bite down and place stress on your teeth and jaw bones. You may find it more difficult to get those shifted teeth clean, as well. Uncleaned tooth debris can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. That is why it is important to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures are just one way to replace those missing teeth.

Partial dentures are false teeth attached to a base that matches the color of your gums. The teeth are fashioned to look as realistic as possible. The base may cover a metal framework that helps the partial dentures pop into place and stay put. Just as with a full set of dentures, impressions will be made to make your partial dentures a unique fit for your mouth. Also, they will be removable so that you don’t have to wear them while you sleep.

There are some benefits to having custom fit partial dentures and they may include: being able to chew food, speaking better, and providing support for cheeks and lips so that the face does not sag. For some patients, it may take some time to get used to the change, especially if they’ve had missing teeth for quite some time. If you’re worried that it will be awkward, just know that with very little practice, you will be able to do the things you did before.

It is important to note that partial dentures can fit differently with age so it’s important to inform the dentist of any loose teeth, breaks, cracks, or chips. Repairs are possible if caught soon enough.
